Frequently Asked Questions

Sharpening Mower Blades

Q: Is there a special procedure for sharpening mowing blades?

A: Not really. However, care must be taken to correctly sharpen and balance each blade. Remember, grinding on a mower blade will generate friction heat, causing the blade to lose its "tempering", and thus become soft losing its ability to hold a sharp edge. Alternately sharpen each cutting edge, to maintain balance and to keep heat to a minimum. If you begin to see brown or blue discoloration on the cutting edge, stop immediately! The blade is becoming too hot. Allow it to cool before proceeding. Blades must be checked for balance before use. Inexpensive blade balancers are available at most hardware stores, and at all lawn mower repair centers. There is a good balancing procedure, using a small diameter rod and a bench vise, described in the EverRide mower operator's manual.
